MOVE WITH MAX

Introducing the Move with Max programme from our friends and partners at Go Well

Move with Max’ is an EYFS programme that supports teachers to deliver fundamental movement skills (FMS) through readily available story books. The programme makes links with the ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ and the ‘Durham Progression of Skills’ documents to support the teaching of topics through physical activity.

Research suggests that early childhood is an extremely important phase to acquire and develop FMS, in particular between 3-5 years old. Hence, ‘Physical Development’ being classified as a prime area of learning. It is also widely accepted that physical development supports the progress of the child across other areas of learning, ensuring they can access general daily tasks.

A child’s environment has a critical role in shaping their behaviours and children should be given the opportunity to explore their physical capabilities and to develop these throughout their free play. However, it must be acknowledged that research highlights that FMS do not develop naturally through the maturation process. Therefore, FMS programmes should be put in place to allow for the acquisition, development and reinforcement of these basic skills.
