SHAPE Weekly Newsletter

20th November 2024

Welcome!

Welcome to this week’s newsletter! It seems winter has finally arrived, bringing with it the beauty of snow-covered landscapes.  As we try to stay warm, let’s dive into this week’s updates!

Warm regards, SHAPE Learning Partnership Team

Actions For This Term

TERM 2

  1. Have you looked at your PE, school sport and physical activity offer through the gender lens?    (Reflect on your offer in terms of activities, stereotypes, interests, barriers to participation.  Are girls and boys afforded the same access and opportunities? How do you know?)

  2. Have you devised a clear plan for your 60 active minutes offer?    (Consider a 360 reflection of breaks, lunch, lessons, clubs.  Is this strategically planned for and carefully constructed to provide opportunities for all to be active? What do the staff / pupils want and need?)

  3. Have you identified and planned for the professional development needs of your staff?    (What are the strengths and areas for development of the staff team based on the demands of the curriculum and wider offer?  Have you conducted an audit / needs analysis and identified any key training or mentoring?)

Sheffield Schools Bouldering Competition 2025

(Derbyshire Schools have kindly been invited to take part in this event)

The Climbing Works are delighted to announce that registration is open for the 2025 Sheffield and Greater Sheffield Schools Bouldering competition.

This is a fun, inclusive competition, offering a new experience for many who enter. This year, the top 5 qualifying schools along with 4 schools selected at random will take part in the finals for each category (primary/secondary). An additional space in the finals will be reserved for a SEN school.

Primary Schools: Engage and widen participation

They want to welcome as many new climbers as possible and offer the opportunity to those who wouldn't normally have access to climbing, rather than those who already climb regularly. We ask teachers to follow this criteria when selecting their participants. If your pupils are experienced climbers, we still want to see them compete in our youth events later in the year. Some of our competitions include the Summer Youth Cup in June, and The Young Climbers Festival in August.

How does the competition run?

All registered schools will take part in a 2-hour qualification round booked between 8 January - 7 February.

10 Sheffield Primary and Secondary schools will be invited to take part in a FUN and FREE final on the 12th March.

10 Greater Sheffield (inc Derbyshire) Primary and Secondary schools will be invited to take part in a FUN and FREE final on the 13th March.

This year you will be able to book optional practice sessions prior to the qualification rounds. This means that your school can brush up on their climbing skills and go into the qualification rounds feeling confident. These can be booked throughout November and December, depending on availability.

How to enter?

To enter a team, you will need to register.

Primary schools click here - Primary teams can be made up of year 5 and 6 pupils only.

All teams must have male and female competitors.

Once you have registered you will be sent a link to book a qualification slot.

How do the qualification rounds work?

Each school will have 2 hours to try the qualification blocs (8-12 climbs), with points being scored on how many of the climbs get topped and the number of attempts.

The top 6 scores from your school will be added up to give your school an overall score. Each school's score must include at least one male and female.

Qualification rounds will end on the 7th February and schools will be notified if they have made it to the final.
