SHAPE Weekly Newsletter

8th January 2025

Welcome!

Happy New Year! We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break and enjoyed some well-deserved rest and relaxation.

Please take a moment to check out our Upcoming Events section. There are still places available for events until the end of March.

We are excited to announce a new section in our weekly newsletter. If you have any news, achievements, or shout-outs that you would like us to share with our affiliated schools, please email l.caton@brookfieldcs.org.uk.

Warm regards, SHAPE Learning Partnership Team

Actions For This Term

  1. Have you shared what physical literacy is with staff, pupils and parents?  The Sport England Physical Literacy Consensus is a great infograph to share via email / newsletter article, social media post.
  2. Have you targeted any young people who would benefit from attending an intra/inter-school sports competition or event?  Have you considered any young people who haven't attended an event but would benefit from the challenge of reaching their best, collaborating in a team and developing empathy and respect?
  3. Have you identified and engaged your least active?  Who are your least active children, and how do you know?  What would spark their interest in some form of physical activity, and how can you engage and inspire them to be physically active?

Student Wellbeing From imoves

New research shows just how much physical activity can boost children’s mental health – and the results are pretty inspiring!

Here’s what has been learnt:

  • Exercise = Happier Kids: Regular movement helps reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in children.
  • Builds Confidence: Active kids feel more in control, bounce back faster from challenges, and tackle their day with a big dose of self-esteem.
  • Quick Wins: Even short bursts of movement (like brain breaks) can lower stress levels and improve focus in the classroom.

Pretty powerful stuff, right?

It’s proof that movement doesn’t just keep kids physically healthy – it’s a game-changer for their emotional well-being too.

Why This Matters for You!

Adding a bit of movement into the school day – whether it’s a quick PE lesson, an energising brain break, or a silly dance-off – can help your students feel happier, calmer, and ready to learn. (And who doesn’t want a more focused and cheerful classroom?)

Want some ideas to get started?

imoves have put together a guide full of simple, practical ways to bring more movement into your day and support your students’ well-being.

Join Mo’s Mission: Let’s get moving together!

Four-time Olympic Champion Sir Mo Farah CBE, National School Sport Champion for the Youth Sport Trust charity, has launched Mo’s Mission to empower more children in the UK to be physically active. He wants all children and young people to get 60 minutes a day of PE, sport and play.

Sir Mo Farah said;

"Every young person should grow-up happy, healthy and with the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Ensuring they are physically active for 60-minutes a day is an important part of making this happen.?

"Too few children in the UK are exercising regularly and it’s having a detrimental impact on their health and wellbeing. In my new role as National School Sport Champion, it is my mission to get as many young people moving on a daily basis as possible. The power of sport helped me find my passion as a young person, so I’m firmly encouraging kids across the UK to get involved in ‘60 minutes a day - of PE, sport and play.’"

Join the Youth Sport Trust and make your pledge today!

You can make your pledge by filling out the form HERE and downloading your 60 minutes a day active tracker to keep track of your daily activity and encourage others to do the same!

Don’t forget to share your progress by tagging @YouthSportTrust on social media and use the hashtag #MosMission

?By joining Mo's Mission, you’ll help the Youth Sport Trust ensure every child can access the enormous benefits that come from being active!

SEND Shooting Stars

Disney inspired Shooting Stars SEND is a programme that has been designed for schools to inspire young people with SEND to engage in their active minutes through football. The programme provides a suite of resource cards that include ready-made session plans which include fun, inclusive activities for pupils encouraging the development of their fundamental movement skills. The resource cards have been created in consultation with the Youth Sport Trust's Lead Inclusion Schools with the aim of specifically engaging more young people with SEND in physical activity and football.

The virtual training sessions below have been created to demonstrate how SEND Shooting Stars can be implemented within your school through bringing the resource to life. Once the training has been completed, the resources will be sent to you directly.
